Public Liability

Do I need Public Liability Insurance?

If you are visiting a client's site or a client/public is visiting your premises Public Liability Insurance is a must for any Freelance Contractor.

What does Public Liability Insurance Cover?

Public Liability insurance (or Contractor General Liability Insurance when including Employers Liability) provides insurance cover for any damages awarded to someone because of an injury or damage to their property caused by you or your business. This will also cover any related legal fees, cost or expenses.

Do I need Public Liability Insurance as a Freelance Contractor?

Quite simply, if you do not have Public Liability insurance then you are running a risk.
Whether on your own premises or at a clients' site - a freelance contractor has a duty to protect anyone who might be affected by your activities. If you fail in this duty and someone is injured, or property is damaged as a result of your actions then you could become legally liable to them for compensation.

Amount of cover required

There is no legal limit of Public Liability insurance required, however, a high amount of freelance contractors will require £5,000,000 Public Liability to comply with contractual obligations with clients or agencies they work for. This insurance for freelancers is not particularly expensive, and you may make significant savings by buying a contractor general liability insurance policy for your business, which typically includes employer's liability, as well as public liability cover.
