A noteworthy report for all contractors was issued this month highlighting the importance of holding personal accident cover. The report confirmed that the self employed were at most risk of financial loss if hospitalised. Of 400 contractors surveyed, an amazing 72% didn't have any kind of insurance that would help the financial burden of being unable to work through a workplace accident.

Don't get caught out by AWR!

From our blog

By Richard Bell on 05/05/2011

The new Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) will come into force later this year and for those keen to be seen as outside the scope of the regulations focus will return to IR35 tests.

In the draft guidance "the definition of an agency worker excludes those who are in business on their own account", but simply owning a Limited Company and putting your earnings through it will not be enough to put you beyond the scope of the regulations.

IR35 Staying Put!

From our blog

By Natalie Parkinson on 28/03/2011

Now it's been decided that IR35 is here to stay, albeit with better management by HMRC, freelance contractors needs to refresh themselves with it, ensuring they are compliant.

Taking out Insurance for your limited company has always been a good indicator to HRMC of your independent status, and although you can buy the basic requirements to satisfy this element, you should also be thinking how best to cover your company for all eventualities.

Insurance Premium Tax to Increase to 6%

By Richard Bell on 22/06/2010

Chancellor George Osborne has announced in his emergency budget that Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) will rise to 6% with effect from 4th January 2011. As a result of this change our premiums will increase on 4 January 2011 to reflect the additional tax levied.

The current rate of Insurance Premium Tax is 5%, which compares favourably with a number of European countries who levy as much as 20% for IPT. It had been suggested that the new government would raise the level of IPT in the UK to that of VAT, which would be broadly in line with the European approach, and the small increase is considered by many to be a blessing given the current financial deficit faced by the UK and the new coalition governments efforts to reduce this.

This change will affect all insurance policies in the UK and we are sorry to have to pass this on, but please rest assured that we remain committed to providing the best value insurance package for freelance contractors.
